Substantial delays can occur due to high levels of network traffic or even due to the long distance between the master clock and the user.

Some commercially available software algorithms can reduce these errors but, unless the errors are accurately and independently measured at the point of use, the user cannot be certain of the accuracy of his time source in this type of application.

Additionally, the high accuracy of the Time Spy/Time Spy Elite means that these can also precisely measure the time error of free-running clocks and timing systems which are synchronized from untraceable sources, such as television and radio broadcasts, electrical power lines and via the internet.

Through the use of separate earth planes for digital and analogue signals, high-speed digital pulse rates and time codes are available together with low phase noise frequencies in a single instrument.

The proprietary backplane system allows the generation of any frequency, pulse rate or time code from just three core signals. This ensures that advanced features such as dual or triple redundancy can be simply achieved within the instrument thus improving the overall availability of the system.

The TFD8000 can be configured to process and distribute time and frequency signals referenced to an external source such as an external GPS Receiver or Cesium clock.

Alternatively, the TFD8000 can generate the signals internally by means of an integral GPS or LF Receiver. Additionally, a wide variety of oscillators is available for inclusion in the Tracking Oscillator/Clock module, which can be configured either to free run or to lock to the reference source. By selection of the appropriate oscillator, the required holdover performance can be met in a cost effective manner.

For the most complex applications including full redundancy, a complete TFD8000 System may comprise of a number of chassis in combination, thereby fulfilling complicated system requirements that are far beyond the capacity of most competitive products. Most distribution modules are 4E wide and provide 5 outputs of a particular signal type.

Time trace II is an exceptionally accurate time and frequency comparison system which, when used in conjunction with a similar device in a National Standards Laboratory, brings the accuracy and traceability of your National Time standard into your laboratory. Time trace II enables calibration of clocks and frequency sources without resort to the use of travelling clocks.

Time trace II uses the Global Positioning System (GPS) common-view technique to achieve highly accurate time and frequency comparisons. By carrying out simultaneous observations of GPS signals, measurements of the clock times of the same satellites are made against the local clocks at the user’s site and the reference site.

Through the technique of inter-comparison of the same event time at the two sites, any deviation of the satellite timing is removed. The GPS common-view technique has been used for time and frequency transfer between National Metrology Institutes for many years. The Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM) has published a series of Technical Directives that standardize the measurement method and data formats.

Time trace II uses a multi-channel GPS receiver capable of simultaneously tracking up to 12 satellites to offer high performance and reliability at an accessible cost. The unit processes data and produces files in accordance with BIPM directives.

The user is strongly advised to work with a National Metrology Institute and make direct comparisons with a national time standard which has a published performance. Users can also make comparisons between clocks located at their own sites.

Additionally, Time trace II can make stand-alone GPS time measurements against GPS Time with an uncertainty of 30ns (1σ).

The M170 is a highly versatile Multi-Purpose Clock & Countdown/Up Generator designed for any application where count down or up is essential, such as range timing and event time management.

  • Maintains a count of time in hours through to tenths of a second
  • Start time preset by front panel switches at switch-on, or operator entry
  • Hold resolution 0.1 second
  • Synchronized to an external time and frequency source
  • High accuracy internal oscillator options available
  • Remotely controllable

The count time can be stopped and started by the operator or by remote control. The M170 Countdown/Up Generator has an RS232 / RS422 serial interface which automatically outputs the Generator count time with sign, direction and run/hold status once per second.

‘Countdown’ signifies that the time display on instrument and the output count is negative and decreases (counts towards zero) when the count runs. After the count passes through zero, the sign changes to positive and the count increases. In both cases to move to the next count the instrument simply adds 0.1s to the current count.

Serial/Time code Display

A wide range of interfaces is provided in the product allowing it to be used in conjunction with a master timing system and in a variety of applications.

The display can be also operated in conjunction with an external Time Receiver. With this arrangement, the display only requires an AC power source to operate; the display will automatically acquire accurate time from the selected time source.

External Time Receivers are available for most LF Time broadcast services and for reception of time from the Global Positioning System (GPS).

Alternatively, the display can be manually configured to run autonomously via switches set in the case.

Network Time Display

Network Time Display is available for use with computer networks operating Network Time Protocol (NTP). By connecting the display to the network, a clear indication of time or date in digital format is provided. Through use of NTP, the display automatically acquires accurate time at any location where a network connection is available.

The display can be driven by a selection of master clocks; Time & Frequency Solutions offer a Master Clock, which is optimized for these displays. The standard components include mechanisms that allow the automatic setting of the clock hands to the correct time, digital day/date displays for calendar presentation within the clock, and rear illumination/LCD shutter systems for automatic blanking of the clock in the event of loss of control data to the clock. A range of dial and hand sizes and styles are also available and custom versions can be supplied.

Available Clock Types

1. Pulse Analogue ClockThese analogue clocks are driven via a pulse received from the Master Clock or Timing System and are an economic solution to any analogue display requirement.

2. Intelligent Analogue ClockThese clocks include an integral control board and receive encoded time data from a Master Clock or Timing System. The main benefit of this type of clock is that the hands will set themselves to the correct position, even after a power interruption, resulting in minimal manual intervention.

3. NTP Network SMART Analogue ClockThe time displayed by these clocks can be derived from a national time standard, using a TFS Network Time Server. The clocks are synchronised by a permanent connection to a computer network on which a Network Time Server is running.

Fully automatic: The internal microprocessor synchronies to the NTP Server, and the SMART clock will automatically set itself to the correct time. After initially programming the SMART clock, when time moves backwards or forwards as in Winter/Summer time changeovers, no manual adjustments are required.

Easy repositioning: A SMART clock may be easily repositioned in a new location without disturbing the operation of other SMART clocks. Multi time zone: Individual offsets can be programmed into each SMART clock so that the clock will automatically display the time in different time zones as required. General Options.

Size: Clock sizes from 300mm diameter up to 1m diameter can be accommodated.

Hands: A range of sizes and styles of hands are available. Custom versions can also be supplied.

Styles: Cardinal, ordinal and numeral presentation of the dial can be provided. Custom versions can also be supplied.

Clock Mechanism: Two types of mechanism are available:

1) Impulse mechanisms using reverse polarity pulses

2) Stepper motor mechanisms with integral hand position sensing. Hour, minute and second and hour and minute only versions are available for both mechanism types.

Illumination: Rear or front illumination is available. In both cases, illumination is automatically controlled so that it is extinguished in the event of loss of control data to the clock.

LCD Shutter: In cases where rear illumination is selected, our LCD shutter can be incorporated. The LCD shutter is controlled such that in normal operation, the shutter is transparent. In the event of loss of the control data to the clock, the shutter is set to the opaque condition.

SLATE: System Level Automatic Test Equipment (SLATE)

System Level Testing on complete systems is used to verify their functional specification and performance requirements. Such testing will find errors in the assemblies that make up the system or in the system as a whole. The test specification incorporates the expected customer usage pattern. System level testing gives best results when the individual components have also been tested at unit level. The testing identifies any issues due to the interaction of the multitude of components with each other as well with the environment and the user. This human factor aspect i.e. the effect of the envisaged user behaviour forms an important part of any system level test system.

Conventionally, custom built test jigs or manual processes are used for system testing with detailed manual work instructions for performing the system level testing. Some disadvantages of this approach are the strong dependence on operator skill, high time to test, & lower reliability. A System Level ATE (SLATE) will automate, supervise and augment the test process to boost the operator accuracy and speed of testing by replacing the test jig and manual controls by a computer controlled system with simplified easy to use interface with the DUT.

System level testing involves complex test sequences (based on use cases) that usually do not presuppose detailed knowledge of every component in the Device Under Test (DUT). The number of tests is smaller (few tens to about a hundred) than component/PCB in-circuit ATE specifications which may have thousands of tests. Additionally, external sensors and/ or other equipment/ devices/ instruments (including simulation of Hardware in the Loop) may form part of the test system requiring their responses to be part of the test sequence. Tests can involve multiple types of data including digital, analog and interface to other devices via Ethernet, RS-232, USB, I2C, SPI, CAN etc. and also HMIs.
